ILO report: 83% of unemployed individuals in India young people

The ‘India Employment Report 2024,’ unveiled by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD), highlights significant shifts in the Indian job market over a two-decade period.

The ILO report reveals a notable surge in unemployment among educated youth, with their share nearly doubling from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022, forming a substantial 83% of the country’s unemployed workforce.

It also highlights that the pandemic has had a significant impact on employment, with a decline in employment rates during the pandemic years.

The report also raises concerns about the quality and sustainability of jobs created during economic slowdowns and emphasizes persistent challenges in effectively transforming India’s employment structure.
