English priest recounts his journey to Holy Karbala during blessed Arba’een Pilgrimage

The English Anglican priest, Andrew Thompson, recounted his visit to Holy Karbala a few months ago, where he was astonished by the number of pilgrims and organization.

Thompson described in his writings the experience of the Arbaeen Pilgrimage to Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam, as he joined millions of visitors during his visit in 2023.

Titled “Inside One of the Greatest Religious Pilgrimages in the World,” Thompson provided a poignant description of this unique experience, describing how this massive gathering, attended by over 20 million visitors from around the world, brought together people of all ages and backgrounds in the holy city of Karbala.

The English priest participated in the city’s activities, witnessing the generosity and hospitality offered by Iraqi volunteers to the visitors. As Thompson embarked on his journey in this flowing sea of humanity, he came face to face with many people from around the world, including many Muslim visitors.

He felt safe, welcomed, and even honored due to his white robe as a Christian priest, noticing how many warmly greeted him with a handshake or a touch on the shoulder, reflecting respect for the historical role Christians played in supporting Imam Hussein in the tragedy of Karbala.

Thompson concluded his article by affirming that he would share with the world what he saw and experienced in this impactful visit, just as the survivors of the Battle of Karbala did upon their return from captivity.
