Grand Ayatollah Shirazi says just rulers should respect their subjects’ will
The Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husayni al-Shirazi, has emphasized that a just ruler respects the opinions of the people and does not impose personal beliefs upon them.
Citing Imam Ali’s approach to leadership, the Grand Marja quoted, “Yesterday I was your leader, but today I am among you. It is not for me to impose upon you what you dislike.” This statement, the Grand Marja noted, encapsulates the principle of a ruler who honors the will of the people and avoids coercion.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi explained that a fair leader never forces actions without the people’s consent, describing this as the essence of an authentic Islamic government—a model demonstrated by the Holy Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali, peace be upon them. He highlighted how, despite facing severe challenges, Imam Ali, peace be upon him, led with justice and compassion, refraining from oppression or compulsion.
Through his teachings and gatherings, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi consistently encourages contemporary leaders to follow the example of the Holy Prophet and Imam Ali, peace be upon them, in pursuing justice and fostering peace under principled Islamic rule.
