World Leaders Gather in Paris for High-Stakes AI Summit Amid Diplomatic Challenges

Major world leaders, tech executives, and scientists are convening in Paris for a pivotal AI summit focused on global cooperation and governance, VOA reported.

The two-day summit, which began on Monday, February 10, is attended by representatives from around 100 countries, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing.

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of harnessing artificial intelligence for societal benefit, stating, “AI will enable us to live better, learn better, work better.” He highlighted the need for Europe to capitalize on the technological revolution unfolding globally.

The summit serves as Vance’s first overseas trip since taking office, where he plans to discuss pressing issues such as Ukraine and the Middle East during a working lunch with Macron. European leaders are closely monitoring Vance’s stance on U.S. foreign policy, especially regarding tariffs and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The event aims to foster advancements in AI across various sectors, including health and education. A new public-private partnership, “Current AI,” is set to be launched to support initiatives that prioritize public interest.

Co-hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the summit seeks to involve diverse global actors in AI development, countering the potential dominance of U.S. and Chinese interests. France is expected to announce significant private investments in AI, totaling $113 billion, positioning itself as a key player in the future of technology governance.
