Canada: Poll Reignites Debate Over Mosque Loudspeaker Call to Prayer
——————————————-
A public debate has intensified in Canada over the broadcasting of the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) through loudspeakers at the Regina City Jamia Masjid mosque in Saskatchewan, following a municipal decision allowing the practice on a limited basis.

According to Radio-Canada, the mosque was granted permission to broadcast the adhan once a week before Friday prayers. The decision prompted a public survey aimed at measuring Canadians’ views on the issue.

The poll reflected divided opinions. Supporters said the practice represents religious freedom and reflects Canada’s multicultural identity, while opponents argued that broadcasting religious announcements through loudspeakers in public spaces may disturb nearby residents.

The controversy also spread on social media, where reports of hateful comments and threats emerged following the first broadcast. Regina police launched an investigation into the messages and increased security measures around Muslim community gatherings.

Mosque officials emphasized that the adhan is limited to one weekly broadcast and is conducted in accordance with municipal regulations. They described the initiative as a legitimate expression of religious freedom.

The discussion has highlighted broader questions in Canada about balancing cultural diversity, freedom of worship and respect for shared public spaces.
