Muslims commemorate passing anniversary of Holy Prophet’s uncle – Abu Talib
Muslims remember on the 26th of Rajab the passing of Abu Talib, peace be upon him, the uncle of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, known as the “Believer of Quraysh.”
Abu Talib was a steadfast supporter and protector of the Holy Prophet, taking him under his care after the death of his father, Abdullah. Religious speakers highlight this occasion in gatherings, shedding light on Abu Talib’s significant contributions to supporting the Prophet and the Islamic message.
Historical accounts suggest that Abu Talib passed away in the tenth year of the Prophet’s Mission, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice and unwavering support for the Prophet. Abu Talib, whose full name was Abdul Manaf ibn Abdul Muttalib ibn Hashim, was a prominent leader of Quraysh and a respected figure in Mecca. He was married to Fatimah bint Asad, who bore him noble children, including Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and Ja’far al-Tayyar.
Historians affirm that Abu Talib was a believer in monotheism and the Islamic message, though he concealed his faith due to political and social reasons, enabling him to safeguard the Prophet and his mission.
Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, highlighted Abu Talib’s faith, saying: “The faith of Abu Talib, if placed on one side of a scale, and the faith of this entire creation on the other, his faith would outweigh theirs.” He also noted that Imam Ali, peace be upon him, would perform pilgrimage on behalf of Abu Talib and the Prophet’s parents in honor of their status and faith.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, received the news of his uncle’s passing, he was deeply grieved and instructed Imam Ali, peace be upon him, saying, “Go, Ali, take care of his washing, shrouding, and embalming.” At his burial, the Prophet said: “You upheld family ties and earned your reward. You raised me as a child, supported me as an adult, and defended me with unwavering loyalty.”
This occasion serves as a reminder of Abu Talib’s pivotal role in protecting the Islamic call and reaffirms his esteemed position, as emphasized by scholars and researchers in Islamic heritage.
