Today, Tuesday, the Indian judiciary approved a ban on headscarves in classrooms in the southern state of Karnataka.
The Supreme Court in the Indian state of Karnataka issued the ruling after considering petitions by Muslim students against the government’s ban on headscarves, which some schools and colleges have already implemented in the past two months.
Prior to the ruling, the Karnataka government banned large gatherings for a week in the state capital, Bengaluru, “to maintain peace and public order”.
This began in January, when a public school in Karnataka’s Udupi district prevented female students who wear headscarves from attending, prompting protests from Muslims who said they were being denied their basic rights to education and to follow the teachings of their faith.
