Shia Communities Commemorate Martyrdom of Lady Fatima al-Zahra with Symbolic Funeral Processions, Mourning Assemblies
————————————————————
Shia Muslims in Iraq and Iran have held mourning ceremonies and symbolic funeral processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her), the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family).
In the holy city of Samarra, large crowds of devotees from across Iraq and abroad gathered at the Holy Shrine of Imam al-Hadi and Imam al-Askari (peace be upon them). A symbolic funeral procession organized by the shrine’s mourning procession began in the surrounding streets and proceeded toward the holy sanctuary and the residence associated with Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance). Participants carried the symbolic coffin amid expressions of grief and mourning, commemorating the tragedy according to the narration that places Lady Fatima’s martyrdom 40 days after the passing of her father.
The city of Kut also witnessed a large symbolic funeral procession, attended by mourners from different districts and surrounding areas. Participants carried the symbolic coffin, recited mourning chants and elegies.
Meanwhile, in the holy city of Qom, the first day of Fatimid mourning assemblies began at the residence of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Scholars, seminary teachers and students, and other believers attended the gatherings. Religious speakers, including Sheikh al-Fathi, Sheikh al-Haeri al-Tabasi and Sheikh al-Baqi al-Isfahani, addressed Lady Fatima’s virtues, her elevated status in Islam, and the moral and spiritual lessons associated with her life.
The ceremonies in Samarra, Kut and Qom form part of wider Fatimid mourning observances held by Shia communities in Iraq and around the world. These include religious lectures, mourning gatherings and symbolic processions intended to preserve the memory of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her), reflect on her role in defending the principles of Islam, and strengthen the community’s connection with the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).
The commemorations follow different historical narrations regarding the date of Lady Fatima’s martyrdom, including accounts associated with 40 and 75 days after the Holy Prophet’s passing. Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi has previously emphasized the importance of commemorating Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) and upholding the religious ceremonies held in her honor.
On this solemn occasion, Shia Waves Agency also extended condolences to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), the Imams from Lady Fatima’s descendants (peace be upon them), and particularly Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance), praying that believers may remain steadfast in following the teachings and example of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her).
