UNESCO Highlights Literacy as Human Right and Foundation for Peace and Development

UNESCO has reaffirmed the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a key driver of human development, social inclusion, and sustainable peace on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

The UN agency stated that literacy extends beyond the ability to read and write, providing the foundation for people to acquire knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that support equality, tolerance, justice, and respect for human rights.

UNESCO emphasized that improving literacy contributes to building more inclusive, fair, and sustainable societies, while strengthening global citizenship and peaceful coexistence. The organization noted that literacy plays an important role in promoting understanding, reducing inequalities, and supporting lifelong learning opportunities.

Despite global progress, UNESCO reported that at least 739 million young people and adults worldwide still lacked basic literacy skills in 2024, while millions of children continue to face difficulties in achieving minimum reading proficiency.

The organization called for continued investment in literacy programs and inclusive education policies to ensure that all people can access learning opportunities and participate fully in social and economic life.
