On April 18, countries around the world marked World Heritage Day—also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites—highlighting the need to protect cultural and natural heritage amid growing environmental challenges.

For this year’s observance, UNESCO emphasized the theme “Heritage and Climate,” drawing attention to the increasing risks that climate change and natural disasters pose to historic landmarks and ecosystems. The agency called on governments and institutions to adopt practical measures to safeguard heritage sites for future generations.

UNESCO reiterated that under the World Heritage Convention, the loss or deterioration of cultural or natural heritage is considered a loss for all humanity, underscoring the need for stronger international cooperation.

Events and awareness campaigns were held globally, focusing on the link between heritage preservation and environmental sustainability, as well as the protection of historic cities and archaeological sites from climate-related threats.

Meanwhile, International Council on Monuments and Sites stressed the importance of public awareness, conservation policies, and long-term restoration efforts to ensure the survival of cultural heritage.

The annual observance serves as a reminder of the need to balance development with preservation, as climate pressures on global heritage continue to intensify.
