Lebanon: Israeli Escalation Amid European Moves to Launch a Military Mission
The Israeli army continued its operations in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, coinciding with an announcement from an EU official regarding the readiness of more than 10 member states of the bloc to contribute to supporting Lebanese forces.
In field developments, the Israeli army conducted explosions in the town of Mansouri, Tyre district, and in the town of Rshaf, Bint Jbeil district. Artillery shelling also targeted the town of Mansouri and the outskirts of the towns of Hadatha and Braachit.
The Israeli army announced the destruction of missiles and launch platforms belonging to Hezbollah in the security zone of southern Lebanon.
Furthermore, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, declared that more than 10 member states in the bloc are prepared to contribute their resources and personnel to a new military and civilian mission aimed at advising and training Lebanese forces.
This discussion regarding the potential deployment of an EU mission arises as the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon is set to expire by the end of 2026.
These developments come ahead of the anticipated eighth round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, scheduled to commence in early September in Rome, following the conclusion of the seventh round in the same city on August 6, which ended without an agreement on expanding Israeli withdrawal zones.
