Three Far-Right Extremists Jailed over Plot to Firebomb Mosque in Ireland

Three members of a far-right group known as the Irish Defence Army have been sentenced by Ireland’s Special Criminal Court for plotting an arson attack on Maryam Mosque in Galway, with prison terms of 10 and a half years and eight years.
The extremists had reportedly been radicalized by anti-immigrant material and Islamophobic hate movements. Before their arrest, they prepared explosive devices, recorded a video claiming responsibility for the planned attack and drafted a statement intended to intimidate Ireland’s Muslim community.
The judge said the plot was religiously motivated and intended to spread fear among Muslims. Cooperation between security agencies in Ireland and Northern Ireland helped prevent the attack.
The case has renewed concerns about the threat of Islamophobia and the need to protect Muslim communities and their places of worship.
