More than 80% of Water and Sewage Networks in Gaza Destroyed, Warnings of Increasing Pollution

The Water and Sewage Monitoring Official in the Gaza Strip has warned of the worsening water and environmental crisis, as more than 80% of water and sewage networks have been destroyed, and the available water supply for residents has decreased. In a radio interview, the official, Saeed Al-Aklook, stated that water production in the Gaza Strip has dropped from approximately 300,000 cubic meters per day to just 123,000 cubic meters. Consequently, the per capita share has decreased to between 21 and 22 liters per day.

He explained that the extensive damage to the water and sewage infrastructure has caused significant difficulties in operating and repairing the networks, warning of sewage leakage into the groundwater reservoir and increasing pollution levels. He pointed out that the lack of disinfectant materials and the limited resources available to test water quality make it more challenging to monitor water sources and ensure their safety, raising environmental and health risks faced by the residents.

Al-Aklook emphasized that the continuous deterioration of the water and sewage system not only impacts the shortage of drinking water but also leads to groundwater pollution and reduced capacity for sewage treatment. He warned of the consequences of this on public health and the environment in the sector. These warnings come amid the extensive damage to facilities and infrastructure in Gaza, which further complicates the provision of safe water and essential services to the residents.
