The arrest and trial of civil activists in Morocco have once again drawn attention from rights monitors to the state of human rights and basic freedoms in the North African country.

The judicial measures have triggered criticism from student and social movements.

According to Reuters, a Casablanca court sentenced Zainab El Kharoubi, a civil activist affiliated with the “Gen Z” movement, to a six-month suspended prison term and a fine.

El Kharoubi was tried over critical posts on social media under charges of “incitement to commit crimes through digital platforms.” Human rights groups have described the ruling as a violation of freedom of expression and called for an immediate end to such cases.
