At least 14 children were killed and five others injured after the roof of a private tuition center collapsed in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Tuesday, according to police and emergency officials.

The incident occurred in the Basti Eid Gah area of the Kahna Nau suburb in southern Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city. A spokesperson for the Edhi ambulance service said the collapse caused a high number of casualties among children who were attending classes inside the building.

Punjab Police said two people had been taken into custody as part of an investigation into the incident. Authorities added that rescue teams continued searching the site to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the rubble.

Punjab’s health minister confirmed the death toll to local media and said the injured children were receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals.

Building collapses remain a recurring problem in Pakistan, a country of more than 240 million people. Experts have attributed many such incidents to inadequate enforcement of building safety regulations, the use of substandard construction materials, and weak oversight of construction projects.

The latest tragedy follows a similar incident last July, when a five-story residential building collapsed in Karachi’s Lyari district, killing 27 people.
