Italy Signs National Interfaith Dialogue Pact with Muslim Community Participation
——————————————
Italy has witnessed a significant step in interreligious cooperation with the signing of the pact “The Italian Way of Dialogue: Religions in Public Space and for Social Cohesion” in Rome.
The agreement, signed on June 25, brought together representatives of major religious communities in Italy in a shared civic document aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence, social cohesion, mutual respect, and cooperation against hatred, extremism, and religious discrimination.
The signatories included Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, Orthodox, Protestant, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Baha’i representatives. Islamic institutions participating in the pact included the Italian Islamic Cultural Center, the Italian Islamic Religious Community, the Italian Islamic Confederation, and the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy.
Following the signing ceremony, Italian President Sergio Mattarella received representatives of the religious communities at the Quirinale Palace, where he welcomed the initiative and described interreligious dialogue as an important path toward understanding, cooperation, and the rejection of intolerance.
The participation of Islamic organizations was seen as an important step for Italy’s Muslim community, which is estimated to number several million people, and as part of broader efforts to strengthen its role in the country’s social and civic life.
