18th International Muharram Exhibition Opens in Lucknow with Artists from Around the World

The 18th International Muharram Exhibition 2026 has opened in the Indian city of Lucknow, with wide participation from artists, calligraphers, and photographers from several countries. The exhibition aims to highlight the universal humanitarian message of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, through art and culture.
The exhibition is being held at the historic Lal Baradari building in the Qaiser Bagh area of Lucknow. It features a diverse collection of artworks, photographs, Arabic calligraphy, and paintings inspired by the events of Karbala, Ashura traditions, and rituals associated with the commemoration of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.
This year’s exhibition is being held under the slogan “Keeping the Flame of Humanity Burning,” reflecting its focus on promoting the values of justice, sacrifice, truth, and peaceful coexistence through the universal language of art.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent academic, cultural, and artistic figures, along with researchers and heritage specialists. Organizers emphasized the importance of using art to introduce the humanitarian dimensions of Ashura and strengthen cultural dialogue among societies.
The current edition includes works by artists from Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, the United Kingdom, China, Greece, Azerbaijan, and Saudi Arabia, in addition to broad participation from artists across India.
Dozens of photographers, calligraphers, and painters presented works addressing the tragedy of Karbala, Ashura rituals, and the cultural heritage of Muharram, reflecting a wide range of artistic styles and creative perspectives.
One of the most notable features of this year’s exhibition is the diverse participation of artists and visitors from different religious and cultural backgrounds, including multiple sects and communities in India. This reflects the spirit of coexistence and multiculturalism for which Lucknow is known.
The International Muharram Exhibition is considered one of India’s most prominent annual cultural events. It contributes to introducing the heritage of Ashura and highlighting the human and civilizational dimensions of commemorating Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, through various forms of visual art.
