Immigration Enforcement Raises Fears Among Somali Muslims in Minnesota
………..
Muslim communities in the U.S. state of Minnesota, particularly Somali Americans, are reporting heightened anxiety amid intensified federal immigration enforcement, which has begun to affect daily life and religious practice. Community leaders say emergency meetings have been held by mosque imams and local organizers to address reports that individuals are being stopped or questioned based on accent or background.
Concerns extend beyond undocumented residents to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, prompting some families to limit movement and remain at home. Somali-owned businesses have also reduced operating hours or temporarily closed, citing fear among staff and customers. Attendance at Friday prayers has declined at some mosques, although services continue. Several centers have increased security measures, including cameras and guards, and are coordinating with local authorities.
There have also been reports of brief detentions during routine travel, raising parental concerns about children’s safety, including near schools.
Despite the tension, community solidarity has grown, with neighboring residents and interfaith leaders offering support. Minnesota’s Somali community, estimated at about 80,000 people, continues to call for safety, dignity and the protection of religious freedom.
