UK to Introduce Danish-Style Immigration Reforms Amid Political Divide
…………….

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil a significant overhaul of Britain’s immigration system in the coming weeks, The Independent reported. The planned reforms are expected to draw inspiration from Denmark’s strict border and asylum policies, following a recent visit by Home Office officials to study the Danish model.

Proposals under review include tightening family reunion rules and imposing temporary stays for some refugees. While Labour MPs in “red wall” constituencies have urged stronger deterrents to irregular migration, others warn that adopting tough measures could alienate progressive supporters. The debate comes amid growing concerns over record Channel crossings — with 648 migrants arriving on Friday alone, bringing the annual total to over 38,000.

Mahmood aims to strengthen deterrence against unauthorized entry while expediting the removal of those without legal status. She is expected to meet soon with Danish Immigration Minister Rasmus Stoklund to discuss policy cooperation. Labour MP Gareth Snell backed efforts to create a fairer asylum system, while colleague Nadia Whittome criticized the Danish model as “far-right.” Stoklund defended Denmark’s approach, saying newcomers must “contribute positively” to society or they “aren’t welcome.”
