Researcher Warns Libya’s Migration Crisis Turning Into Geopolitical Issue
…………….
Libya’s migration crisis has shifted from a humanitarian challenge to a geopolitical issue exploited by foreign powers for political gain, security affairs researcher Mohamed Al-Sanousi said in remarks to Al-Masar TV, as reported by Libyan Express. He noted that Libya has effectively become a “country of settlement” for migrants due to political fragmentation and the absence of a unified national policy.
Al-Sanousi said the ongoing crisis reflects a failure within the international system to balance human security with national sovereignty, stressing that the burden lies with both Libya and the global community. He warned that generations of unregistered migrants born in Libya threaten the country’s demographic stability and national identity.
The researcher criticized Europe for abandoning past agreements, such as the 2008 border security pact, and for replacing cooperation with political arrangements that have worsened the situation. He described Europe’s border policies as an attempt to impose forced settlement in Libya.
Al-Sanousi called for rebuilding strong state institutions, establishing clear migration policies, and enhancing coordination with neighboring countries. He urged Libya to press the EU for organized migration pathways, warning that unmanaged flows will continue to strain the nation’s economy and security.
