Libyan security and medical sources said on Saturday that the bodies of at least 15 migrants, including a girl, had been recovered after washing ashore near the eastern city of TobrukLibyan following the sinking of a boat carrying dozens of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.
Reuters quoted a source in the Libyan navy as saying the boat had been carrying around 61 people, according to accounts from 10 survivors who managed to escape the shipwreck.
The bodies were found at several locations along the coastline east of Tobruk, near the Egyptian border. Two security officials said the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition and warned that more victims could be found in the coming days.
In a separate incident, the Emergency Medicine and Support Center in the city of Khoms, affiliated with Libya’s Health Ministry, said its ambulance teams provided medical care to 13 migrants after their boat sank off the city’s coast.
Libya remains one of the main transit points for irregular migrants attempting to reach Europe across the Mediterranean, as people continue to flee conflict, poverty and instability in several African and Asian countries.
