Rare “Super Harvest Moon” to Light Up October Sky

Rare “Super Harvest Moon” to Light Up October Sky
………….

Astronomers say the night sky will host a rare celestial event in October 2025, as the full moon reaches its largest and brightest appearance of the year. This unique occurrence combines the features of a “supermoon” and a “harvest moon” for the first time in 37 years. The phenomenon will peak on Tuesday, October 17, at 4:48 a.m. GMT, making it visible across much of the world.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, appearing noticeably brighter and larger. The harvest moon, traditionally observed by Northern Hemisphere farmers around the autumnal equinox, provided extra light for evening harvest work before artificial lighting existed. This year’s harvest moon falls in October rather than the usual September, marking the first October appearance since 1987.

Observers may also experience the “moon illusion,” where the moon appears larger near the horizon due to optical perception. NASA notes that this visual effect continues to intrigue scientists. Following this event, additional supermoons are expected in November and December, offering enthusiasts more spectacular views.
