At least 38 people have been killed and dozens injured in a devastating traffic accident on the road between Damascus and Deir ez-Zor after a security personnel bus collided with a civilian bus in central Syria.

The accident occurred on Saturday in the area between Al-Sukhnah and Palmyra (Tadmur), when a sleeper bus carrying members of the Internal Security Forces crashed into another civilian bus, resulting in a large number of casualties.

The Syrian Civil Defense said its teams rushed to the scene, provided first aid to the injured, and transported them to Palmyra Hospital for medical treatment. Rescue teams also assisted in transferring the bodies of the victims in coordination with relevant authorities and extinguished a fire that broke out following the collision.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, confirming that the crash between the two buses caused a significant number of deaths and injuries.

Meanwhile, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that the Ministry of Defense deployed helicopters to support medical evacuation operations and transport injured victims and casualties to Homs Military Hospital to accelerate rescue efforts and provide necessary medical care.

The accident is considered one of the deadliest traffic incidents on the Damascus–Deir ez-Zor desert highway in recent years, while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances and causes of the crash.
