A Muslim woman in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, was physically attacked in front of her seven-year-old child, prompting renewed concerns over Islamophobia and hate crimes in the country.

According to reports, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said the incident occurred while the family was participating in a vehicle convoy. A group allegedly targeted them with racist remarks, including statements telling them to “go back to your country,” before physically assaulting the woman.

Videos shared on social media reportedly showed the child attempting to protect his mother during the attack, while the woman’s husband was not present at the scene.

The NCCM stated that the woman suffered facial swelling, a nosebleed, and signs of physical assault following the incident. The organization called for a full investigation, including the possibility that the attack was motivated by hate.

A spokesperson for the council said the incident had a significant psychological impact on the woman’s seven-year-old son, who witnessed the assault against his mother.

The organization called on Canadian authorities to take a clear stance against Islamophobia and show solidarity with the Muslim community.

The president of the Islamic Association of Moncton said the attack has increased concerns among local Muslims, coming only days after an anti-Muslim incident targeting a mosque in the region and another incident in Halifax.
