The Plight of Myanmar’s Rohingya: Stateless and Displaced
——————————-
The Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority from Myanmar, continue to face severe systemic persecution and forced displacement, leaving over a million people stateless and dependent on aid, according to an opinion piece in Daily Sabah.

The crisis stems from a 1982 Burmese law that stripped the Rohingya of their citizenship. Violence peaked on August 25, 2017, when a military “clearance operation” forced over 600,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. The total number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh is now over 1 million.

Refugees in the overcrowded Cox’s Bazar camps face dire conditions, including unhygienic environments and malnutrition, while their stateless status denies them basic human rights. The crisis also strains host nations like Bangladesh and Malaysia.

The opinion piece urges the international community to pressure Myanmar to restore citizenship and ensure the safe return of the Rohingya, while simultaneously calling for better aid and vocational training for the refugees.
