Iraq and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Baghdad aimed at strengthening cooperation in monitoring borders and combating drug trafficking. The agreement was concluded during the visit of Hossein Zolfaqari, Secretary-General of Iran’s National Anti-Narcotics Committee, at the invitation of Iraq’s Health Minister, who also heads the country’s national committee on drug control.

The MoU includes measures to enhance border surveillance, organize joint training workshops for law enforcement, and expand scientific expertise in prevention, treatment, and demand reduction. It also calls for closer monitoring of psychotropic substances and controlled chemicals to prevent their misuse in illicit drug production.

The signing took place alongside the second meeting of the joint Iraq-Iran anti-narcotics committee, which reviewed past measures and outlined future programs. Both sides stressed that the cooperation aligns with international conventions and bilateral agreements, aiming to strengthen public health, social safety, and regional security.
