……………..
The University of Toronto, in partnership with the Shi’a Research Institute (SRI) and the Institute of Islamic Studies, successfully hosted an international conference titled “The Quran and Shi’a Islam: Texts, Studies, and Heritage” on August 25-26, 2025. The hybrid event took place at the Jackman Humanities Building in Toronto.
The conference explored various Shi’a perspectives on the Quran and showcased the contributions of Shi’a scholars to Quranic studies across history. Over two days, six sessions addressed topics including foundational principles, the roles of prophets and imams, esoteric and exoteric interpretations, sectarian relations, the Safavid transformation, and contemporary theological developments.
Key research papers presented included studies on Imam Ali’s interpretive approaches, Shi’a engagements with the Quran, Druze wisdom literature, Zaydi exegesis, and Shi’a hermeneutics. The event provided a significant platform for academic dialogue, bringing together scholars worldwide to deepen understanding of Quranic scholarship within Shi’a Islam.
