Trump Administration Ends Temporary Protections for Immigrants
The Trump administration is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from seven countries, making thousands of people with legal documents vulnerable to deportation. This action affects individuals from nations including Afghanistan and Haiti, which a UN report says are still unsafe.

According to a report by The Guardian, the DHS has cited “improved conditions” as a reason for ending TPS for immigrants from Afghanistan, Haiti, Venezuela, Honduras, Nicaragua, Nepal, and Cameroon. The termination of TPS for approximately 7,000 people from Nepal expired on August 5, while the status for 51,000 Hondurans and 3,000 Nicaraguans is set to expire on September 8.

The article notes that a federal appeals court sided with the administration, halting a lower court’s order that would have kept the protections in place. While the DHS has cited “rising tourism” as a reason for its assessment of Afghanistan, the U.S. has also issued a travel warning for the country due to civil unrest, crime, and terrorism.
