Gurugram, one of India’s most modern urban centers near New Delhi, is experiencing a worsening municipal waste crisis as garbage remains uncollected for months, Arab News reported. The issue stems from a recent government crackdown on undocumented migrant workers—many of whom are informal garbage collectors—leading to their mass departure from the city.
Residents report garbage piling up in residential areas and streets, with trash burning becoming common. Saurabh Bardhan, owner of local waste management company Green Bandhu, criticized the administration’s handling of the crisis, highlighting that migrant workers have long carried much of the city’s waste management burden.
A Human Rights Watch report noted that over 1,500 ethnic Bengali Muslims were expelled to Bangladesh without due process between May and June, intensifying the labor shortage. Municipal officials claim efforts are underway to resolve the problem, though residents continue to express concerns about public health risks and infrastructure neglect.
