Intense fighting between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border has forced the evacuation of over 130,000 Thai civilians, The Guardian reported. The clashes, now spreading to 12 locations, mark the worst violence between the neighbors in more than a decade.

Thai authorities report 15 deaths, including 14 civilians and an eight-year-old boy, while Cambodian officials confirm one civilian killed and several wounded, with 1,500 families evacuated. The conflict erupted after weeks of rising tensions over territorial disputes rooted in colonial-era map disagreements.

Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned the situation could escalate into full-scale war but stated current actions remain defensive to protect sovereignty. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet supported a Malaysian ceasefire proposal, though both sides accuse each other of initiating attacks and violating international norms.

Fighting involves heavy artillery, rocket systems, and airstrikes, with casualties reported on both sides. Thailand has recalled its ambassador and plans to expel Cambodia’s envoy following landmine incidents injuring Thai soldiers.

The United States, China, and ASEAN chair Malaysia have called for calm and dialogue. The UN Security Council convened to address the crisis amid fears of wider regional instability. Travel advisories have been issued by the UK for affected border areas.
