A Swedish scholar specializing in Islamic studies has described the uprising of Imam Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him) as a timeless and universal message that transcends religious and sectarian boundaries.

David Torfiel, a Christian researcher from Sweden and an expert in religious history, emphasized that the philosophy of Karbala represents a beacon of light for all humanity. “Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) is an eternal light that cannot be extinguished. His stand was not for a single sect or ethnicity, but for the dignity, justice, and love of humankind,” Torfiel said.

He extended his admiration to the followers of Imam Hussein, adding: “You are truly fortunate to have an Imam like Hussein (peace be upon him) and twelve Imams whose spiritual legacy embodies profound values for people everywhere.”

Speaking about the enduring impact of Karbala, Torfiel noted that while the tragedy holds deep emotional significance for Shi’a Muslims, its core principles have also inspired people from other faiths. “Many non-Muslims have found meaning in Hussein’s revolution. The ideals he defended at Ashura — justice, freedom, and resistance to oppression — speak to universal human values,” he explained.

Highlighting Karbala’s inclusive symbolism, Torfiel pointed out that figures associated with Imam Hussein’s companions demonstrate the broad appeal of his cause. “I learned that among Hussein’s supporters was a Christian named John ibn Huwai, which shows that his mission was not confined to Muslims alone. Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him) is also revered by some Christians, and the shrines of Karbala attract Sunni Muslims, Jews, and Christians alike,” he said.

Torfiel concluded by sharing his personal connection to the subject: “I am David Torfiel, a Christian scholar from Sweden who has written several books on Shi’ism.
