India: Community Tensions Erupt Over Mosques, Loudspeakers in Two States
—————————————-
Religious tensions have emerged in two Indian states over mosques and the use of loudspeakers, raising concerns about religious freedom and the treatment of Muslim communities in the country.
According to the Alomah.net website, protests broke out in Kingaon village in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district after a procession organized by the Hindu nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) passed in front of a mosque. Muslim women staged a demonstration on the road, followed by reports of stone-throwing between the two groups. Police intervened to disperse the crowd, including using batons, and additional security forces were deployed.
In Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami published a video showing the removal of loudspeakers installed at several mosques. He defended the measure as part of efforts to combat noise pollution. However, the operation raised questions about whether noise regulations are being applied equally, particularly in relation to loudspeakers used during other religious ceremonies.
Some observers have suggested that the developments could be linked to preparations for upcoming state elections, although no conclusive evidence has been presented to support this interpretation.
