Dozens killed in Gaza strikes as hostage talks continue in Doha

At least 80 people were killed across Gaza on Wednesday amid continued Israeli airstrikes, according to local civil defense officials. The strikes come as diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza intensify, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meeting U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss ongoing negotiations.
Talks are taking place in Doha, where U.S. President Donald Trump also met with the Qatari emir. Witkoff described their discussion on a potential Gaza deal as “productive,” indicating progress on a joint plan. Meanwhile, heavy bombardment struck northern Gaza, including Jabalia, where AFP footage showed residents searching rubble for belongings.
Hospital officials reported severe shortages of medicine and space, with some injured dying due to lack of care. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for an immediate ceasefire, accusing Netanyahu of prolonging the conflict for political reasons. The United Nations and humanitarian groups have condemned the worsening humanitarian crisis, fueled by Israel’s blockade on aid since March.
As the death toll in Gaza surpasses 52,900, the UN has urged for the unconditional release of remaining hostages and a halt to hostilities. Israel has said 57 hostages remain, with 34 presumed dead.
