The Zurich Cantonal Parliament in Switzerland has narrowly voted in favor of banning religious head coverings in public schools and kindergartens, raising concerns over religious freedom and the rights of Muslim students and teachers.

The proposal, introduced by the Swiss People’s Party, passed by 87 votes to 82, with six abstentions. Supporters say the measure promotes neutrality, equality and democratic values in schools, while opponents warn that banning religious clothing could restrict personal freedoms and contribute to the marginalization of religious minorities.
