Anti-Muslim Hate Incident Targets Mosque in British Columbia, Canada

A mosque in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, has been targeted in an alleged anti-Muslim hate incident involving hateful messages and threats written on its walls, along with pieces of pork placed on the mosque’s entrance and near its windows. Police have launched an investigation into the incident as a possible hate crime.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that specialized units had begun investigating the overnight incident. According to the management of the Fleetwood Islamic Academy Association, worshippers discovered signs of the attack when they arrived at the mosque for the dawn prayer.

Hajj Asif Ali, the association’s secretary-general, said that offensive messages targeting Islam and threatening Muslims were written on the exterior walls of the mosque. He added that pieces of raw bacon were found hanging from the door handle and placed near the windows of the building.

Ali stated that the mosque administration has taken necessary measures to enhance the safety and security of worshippers. He also called on leaders and officials in British Columbia to stand with the Muslim community and take stronger action against acts of hatred and intimidation.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) expressed concern over the incident, warning about the recurrence of intimidation and hate attacks targeting Muslims in Canada. The organization called on authorities to work with community representatives to develop a national strategy to combat Islamophobia.

The attack drew widespread condemnation from political and community leaders.
