Authorities in Iraq have started work on reopening Khasfa Pit, the country’s largest mass grave, where thousands of victims were executed by ISIS during its control of Mosul.
Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir Al-Dakhil announced the project on Wednesday, stating that ISIS systematically executed up to 2,000 people daily at the site, dumping victims into the pit.
“This mass grave is one of the largest in the world,” Al-Dakhil said, adding that the exhumation is crucial for providing answers to the families of the missing.
The Nineveh government will fund the project due to limited resources in the Martyrs Foundation. Work will also extend to other mass graves in Tal Afar and Sinjar.
The exhumation and identification process could take up to a year, but authorities have outlined a clear plan to move forward, with support from both local and international organizations.
