Doctors Without Borders Halts Operations at Sudan’s Zamzam Camp Amid Escalating Violence

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has suspended its activities at the Zamzam camp in North Darfur due to intensified fighting between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Arab News reported. The organization announced that the escalation of violence made it “impossible” to provide essential humanitarian aid to thousands of displaced individuals in the area.

Yahya Kalilah, MSF’s head of mission in Sudan, expressed regret over the decision, stating that ongoing violence and difficulties in delivering supplies left the group with “little choice.” The field hospital at Zamzam, initially set up to address malnutrition, has struggled to treat trauma patients, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, including five children.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has led to over 24,000 fatalities and displaced more than 14 million people. Zamzam camp, home to around 500,000, has seen an influx of families fleeing violence, facing severe shortages of food and water.
