Indian Media Highlights Global Significance of Arbaeen Walk and Its Message of Sacrifice

An Indian media outlet has highlighted the global significance of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, describing it as one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings and a symbol of resistance, sacrifice and hospitality inspired by the Karbala movement.
In an analytical article published by Outlook India and cited by Shia Waves Agency, the report said Arbaeen represents more than a mourning ceremony, reflecting the revival of Islamic values and the enduring message of standing against injustice.
The report traced the roots of the pilgrimage to the events of 61 AH, when Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions were martyred in Karbala while resisting what followers of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) regard as oppression and the distortion of Islamic principles.
It noted that Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, a companion of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), was among the first visitors to the shrine of Imam Hussein, establishing the tradition of Arbaeen visitation.
The Indian publication described the annual walk from Najaf to Karbala, a route of approximately 78 kilometres, as a gathering that attracts millions of visitors who receive free services from Iraqi Hussaini service groups.
The report also highlighted the scale of hospitality provided by Iraqis despite years of conflict and economic challenges, saying the phenomenon reflects the continued influence of Imam Hussein’s message of generosity and sacrifice.
It added that the Arbaeen walk was banned during Saddam Hussein’s rule but was revived after his fall, becoming an international symbol of resistance and what the report described as the “Karbala paradigm.”
The article concluded that Arbaeen remains a living expression of the values of Karbala, demonstrating that the message of standing against injustice continues to inspire communities around the world.
