Junta Airstrikes in Myanmar Kill 41 Civilians in Rohingya Village
The Myanmar air force conducted airstrikes on Kyauk Ni Maw village in Rakhine state, resulting in the deaths of 41 civilians and injuring 52 others, primarily Rohingya Muslims, RFA reported. The attack, which destroyed approximately 600 homes and caused significant fires, has been condemned by insurgents as a war crime.
The village is under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), which stated that no fighting was occurring at the time of the bombing. Reports indicate that the airstrikes were a response to an insurgent offer for talks, escalating tensions in the region.
Local residents are providing emergency treatment to the wounded amid fears of further airstrikes. The military has denied targeting civilians, despite a history of indiscriminate attacks in civilian areas. This incident marks a continuation of violence against the Rohingya community, which has faced severe persecution since 2017, leading to the displacement of approximately 740,000 individuals to neighboring Bangladesh.
