The Southern Railway Administration has announced an increase in Al-Ma’qal train services in Basra province to transport pilgrims participating in the Arbaeen commemoration of Imam Hussein to the holy city of Karbala, as part of its transportation plan for the pilgrimage season.

Director General of Southern Railways Reda Al-Hashimi said the plan includes operating six modern trains to accommodate thousands of pilgrims, with three daily trips departing at 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 8:00 PM. The service also provides direct booking options and electronic payment facilities to simplify travel procedures.

Al-Hashimi explained that trains have become a preferred mode of transportation for elderly pilgrims and families due to the comfort and efficiency they provide, while also helping reduce traffic congestion on roads during the Arbaeen pilgrimage season.

He added that railway teams continue to enhance operational readiness and maintain regular services in line with the daily increase in the number of pilgrims traveling to Karbala, as part of broader efforts to ensure smooth and safe transportation during the annual religious gathering.
