Iraq to open Mosul airport in June, 2025, 11 years after Daesh capture

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced on Sunday that the inauguration of Mosul’s airport will take place on June 10, 2025, marking 11 years since the city was seized by the Daesh group, Arab News reported.

On June 10, 2014, Daesh declared its “caliphate” after capturing Mosul, leading to years of conflict. Iraqi forces, supported by a US-led coalition, liberated the city in July 2017.

In a statement, Al-Sudani emphasized that the airport’s opening coincides with the anniversary of Mosul’s occupation, symbolizing defiance against terrorism. Currently, over 80 percent of the airport’s runway and terminals have been completed, following extensive reconstruction efforts initiated by former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in August 2022.

Additionally, Sudani’s office revealed plans to rehabilitate the western bank of the Tigris in Mosul, reinforcing the message that “Iraq is secure and stable and on the right path.”
