Egypt Celebrates Completion of 14th-Centuray Maridani Mosque Restoration

In a ceremony on Tuesday, Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities marked the completion of a multi-year restoration project on the historic 14th-century Mosque of Altunbugha al-Maridani in Cairo, Reuters reported yesterday.

The mosque, built in 1338-40 CE during the Mamluk Sultanate era, underwent a two-phase renovation process, the news agency mentioned.

The first phase from 2018 to 2021 focused on the exterior and minaret, while the second 18-month phase addressed the interior.

The European Union and Aga Khan Foundation provided funding support for the restoration efforts.

The mosque, located on the vital al-Darb al-Ahmar street, had previously undergone renovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
