Australia Launches First National Fund to Support Mosques, Islamic Institutions
————————————————-
The National Council of Imams of Australia has established the Muslim Community Fund, described as the country’s first national funding initiative dedicated to supporting mosques and Islamic institutions.
The initiative aims to address a funding gap affecting long-term projects within Australia’s Muslim community, allowing religious leaders and community organisations to develop sustainable programmes rather than relying primarily on donations for immediate needs.
The National Council of Imams, which represents more than 370 imams and over 260 Islamic and community organisations across Australia, is supporting the initiative. The fund will direct contributions towards key priorities, including preserving Muslim identity, religious guidance and counselling, media outreach, legal assistance, political participation and strengthening relations with wider Australian society.
Its organisers say Australian Muslims regularly contribute to mosques, charitable campaigns and humanitarian assistance overseas, but projects addressing the community’s long-term needs within the country often lack sufficient financial support. The new fund is intended to provide institutions with more stable resources and strengthen their ability to serve their communities and engage with public authorities.
