Somali forces kill 70 al-Shabaab terrorists, injure 30 in military operation
At least 70 al-Shabaab terrorists were eliminated and 30 others wounded in a military operation in Somalia’s northern Mudug region, Anadolu Agency reported on Thursday.
The operation happened in the vicinity of Tabar-mooge, about 28 kilometers (17 miles) north of the recently liberated coastal town of Harardhere, the source mentioned.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, the operation was conducted by the national army and its international security partners.
Insecurity has been a longstanding issue in Somalia, primarily due to the threats posed by al-Shabaab and the Daesh/ISIS terror groups.
Since 2007, al-Shabaab has been engaged in conflict with the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), a multifaceted mission authorized by the African Union and mandated by the UN Security Council.
The group has intensified its attacks following Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s declaration of a comprehensive war against them.
