Human Rights Watch condemns Bahraini authorities for detaining activists demanding freedom
The international non-governmental organization, Human Rights Watch (HRW), has condemned the wave of arrests that have targeted a large number of Bahraini citizens and opponents; because of their human rights activism and demands for freedom of expression.
The rights organization said, in reports published on its official website and viewed by Shia News Agency that: “The Bahraini authorities have targeted a significant number of individuals, political opponents, and those demanding freedom of expression; because of their human rights activities and their posts on social media platforms.”
HRW pointed out that “the increasing numbers of arrests in the kingdom are concerning, as the authorities have arrested at least (57 people), including (25 children), starting from (December 15, 2023)”, explaining that “it is shocking that some were arrested for simply expressing their opinions on social media platforms.”
It added that “detaining children for their peaceful activities reflects a disturbing disregard for basic human rights,” stressing that “freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly are fundamental rights that should be supported and respected by all countries, regardless of their political alliances.”
The organization’s researcher, Niko Gavarnia, also condemned the practices of the Bahraini authorities; and highlighted how the repression campaign extended to peaceful protesters who express their personal opinions and their solidarity with what is happening in the world.”
Gavarinia mentioned that “the authorities used tear gas, sound grenades, and violent arrests against protesters demanding freedom of expression, which reflects a bleak picture of the government’s response to the opposition.”
