Donald Trump Sworn in as 47th US President, Issues Multiple Executive Orders on Day 1
Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, marking his return to the White House.
The ceremony took place indoors at the US Capitol Rotunda due to inclement weather, with Trump accompanied by JD Vance as he took the oath of office. This inauguration signifies Trump’s second term, having previously served from 2017 to 2021.
Upon taking office, Trump displayed a renewed confidence and announced plans to sign a series of executive orders immediately. His initial priorities include a pro-business energy policy and a crackdown on irregular migration, alongside a commitment to “expand” US borders. He issued a warning to Panama regarding the US-built canal.
One of Trump’s first actions was granting clemency to approximately 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, reversing previous efforts to hold them accountable. Among the executive orders he signed was the formal withdrawal of the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, which he initiated immediately. He also announced an end to US participation in the World Health Organization, citing disproportionate financial contributions as the reason for this decision.
In a significant move, Trump suspended all US foreign assistance programs for 90 days pending policy reviews, stating that the foreign aid industry often does not align with American interests. He reinstated Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, reversing a recent designation removal by President Biden, which complicated Cuba’s pledge to release political prisoners.
Additionally, Trump declared a national emergency at the southern US border, facilitating the potential deployment of American troops. He also addressed the definition of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, indicating plans to revise its interpretation.
In a bid to delay a ban on TikTok for 75 days, Trump suggested exploring a potential partnership involving US interests. Protests occurred in Washington, DC, addressing various issues during the inauguration, highlighting the diverse concerns of the public as Trump begins his new term.
