UK Mosque Launches Community Food Fridge to Support Families in Need

Al-Buraq Mosque in Blackburn has launched a new charitable food fridge project to support families in need and reduce food waste.
The Blackburn Community Fridge was opened as part of a growing number of similar initiatives across British cities, encouraging people to share surplus food with struggling families instead of throwing it away.
Project organizers said the initiative aims to provide basic food items to families facing difficult living conditions, while also helping reduce the amount of food wasted each day by redistributing surplus products to those who need them.
The community fridge is located directly opposite the mosque and is managed by a team of volunteers who supervise the collection, organization, and distribution of food to ensure it reaches eligible beneficiaries.
On the first day of the initiative, around 25 people benefited from the fridge, which contained various food items including bread, milk, dairy products, juices, and canned food.
During the opening ceremony, attended by volunteers and local figures, Tabsam Zubair said the project’s main goal is to serve the local community and support the most vulnerable families. He noted that many households continue to face economic challenges despite improvements in conditions for some.
Zubair added that the initiative depends on food donations rather than money, calling on companies, shops, local markets, and individuals to contribute surplus food products in support of families in need.
Organizers said community fridge projects have expanded noticeably in Britain since the COVID-19 pandemic, with several mosques hosting similar initiatives to serve local communities and promote social solidarity.
