Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig has praised the role of Islamic institutions in promoting mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and social cohesion in Austrian society during a meeting with Muslim community leaders in the Austrian capital.
According to the Islamic Community of Austria, the meeting took place at the organisation’s headquarters in Vienna, attended by its president, Ümit Vural, Vienna’s imam, Ermin Şehic, and Binur Mustafa, director of the organisation’s education department.
Discussions focused on cooperation between municipal authorities and Islamic institutions, particularly in education, youth development and social initiatives. Participants also highlighted the contribution of Muslim organisations to strengthening social cohesion and fostering dialogue among different communities.
The meeting followed an earlier exchange held at Vienna City Hall in September 2026. Both sides emphasised that Muslims have been an integral part of Viennese society for several generations and continue to contribute actively to the city’s development through institutional, voluntary and social activities.
Ludwig expressed his appreciation to Muslim institutions and volunteers for their services to society, stressing the importance of upholding democratic values, freedom, equality and mutual respect.
Interreligious dialogue was also among the topics discussed, with participants highlighting the Vienna Interreligious Council as an example of cooperation and constructive engagement between religious communities.
