New Maternal Hospital Opens in Cox’s Bazar Refugee Camp to Improve Care for Rohingya Women

A newly built maternal and neonatal hospital has opened in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh, offering critical healthcare services to thousands of Rohingya refugee women and children who previously lacked access to comprehensive maternal care.

According to The Guardian, the facility was inaugurated on 1 May 2026, marking a significant expansion in humanitarian health assistance in the world’s largest refugee settlement.

Developed with support from international aid agencies, the hospital includes maternity wards, surgical theatres, newborn care units, and space for emergency maternal health procedures. It aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, which have been persistently high due to limited medical infrastructure and ongoing public health challenges in the camps.

Cox’s Bazar, located in southeastern Bangladesh, hosts over 1 million Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Myanmar since 2017. Humanitarian organisations have long warned that inadequate healthcare services were putting women at increased risk during pregnancy and childbirth. The new hospital is expected to dramatically expand capacity for pre‑ and post‑natal care, safe deliveries, and treatment of complications.

Officials said that the facility — staffed by trained medical personnel — will offer free services to refugees while also facilitating referrals for specialized treatments.
