UN: Sudan Facing Worst Food Crisis in 20 Years Amid Ongoing Conflict
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that Sudan is grappling with its worst food security situation in two decades, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
Over 60,000 people have fled fighting in Sennar State, as clashes continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
OCHA’s Vanessa Huguenin said “women, children and entire families are being forced to flee, leaving everything behind.” The conflict, which began in April 2023 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has resulted in nearly 16,000 deaths and a devastating humanitarian crisis across Sudan, according to UN figures.
The worsening situation has left the country facing its “worst food insecurity in 20 years,” the UN official warned.
